Beatin’ Paths

My name is Aidan. I left Harvard to adventure around America by hitchhiking and living in a converted schoolbus. I have traveled ~180,000 miles across all 50 states, including over 21,000 hitchhiking miles & over 60,000 miles driving my bus. My goal is to explore as much of the continent as I can, talk to as many people as possible, and read my way through all the best American literature, poetry, and philosophy. I am thinking about history, nature, freedom, the self; what is America, and what could it be? Along the way, I’m writing. One day, this mosaic of writings will converge on the unfulfilled prophecy of the Great American Novel.

The Great American Novel Project, Explained

If you want to understand me and my writing, this is the best place to start!

“The Great American Novel Project is an overarching meaning-web that ties together my adventures, my reading, and my writing into one cohesive experiment.”

What Is The Great American Novel?

This older poem explores the vibe of the Great American Novel Project in a shorter format.

The Sequoia Papers:

These are a series of longer essays I wrote in 2022 and 2023, meant to deeply explore some key frameworks of my core philosophies.

The Unfinished Fiction of the Nation

A long paper on fiction, tribalism, psychology, American history, nationalism, American ideals, and how to redefine America. This is meant as an in-depth justification of the project.

“Only by being actively conscious of national mythmaking can we both use it as a force for good and effectively resist attempts to use it for evil.”

America and the Shape of the Far Future

A short paper on America, agency, the meta-meme of the New World, and longtermism oriented towards Bay Area types.

“Our goal is to influence the far future by reshaping the memes that make ‘America.'”

American Nihilism and Its Discontents

A crazy essay on nihilism, sociobiology, the origin of meaning, and beyond, the goal of which is to combat the spread of nihilism.

“Nihilism undergirds all of our other problems, and makes us powerless to solve them. We must overcome the disconnection and impotence engendered by nihilism in our culture in order to foster a new culture embracing connection and agency.”

Refind, Refine, Redefine, Refound America

Five essays in one on making America young again, refinding the best essence of America worth conserving, refining America progressively towards its ideals, redefining the identity of America as a meta-identity of self-recreation, and refounding America as the original Founders envisioned we would.

“To refound America is to make America young again.”

This is a 1-minute video explaining the gist of the Great American Novel Project 🙂
